ABOUT THE PROJECT

 

The Ródrigo E. J. Campbell Foundation is an instance of cultural promotion, focused on artists from the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua.  We are honored to present this mix media project: “ANTOJOLOGÍA DE CARL RIGBY”, which includes the production of the documentary film and the creation of this web page with the research about the life and work of Carl Rigby, gallery of photographic images, trailer and a selection of Rigby’s poetry in both, Spanish and English.

 

ANTOJOLOGÍA OF CARL RIGBY

 

The product of two years of conversations, poems, monologues and performances recorded at his home, studio, or during our strolls through the Old Managua or his native, Pearl Lagoon, in Nicaragua’s So. Caribbean.  An attempt to capture and recover the unique discourse of this creator of words, sounds and concepts.Delving into Rigby’s poetry, reveals to us the wondrous voice of someone who, we feel, must be known and remembered for making his life a poetic existence.

CARL EARLINGTON RIGBY MOSES

 

(Pear Lagoon: 19 June 1945 – Managua: 23 May 2017) is considered one of the pioneers of the NiCaribbean spoken word poetry. His poetic work incorporates performative elements, oscillating between social commentary and a critical dialogue with the Afro-descendant tradition of Central America. In more than half a century of intellectual work he produced a proliferative literary work scattered among unpublished poetry books, songs, tongue-twisters, and a “Palabrario” (word index) that included the various neologisms created by the poet, in addition to what he called “versions”: poetic pieces that were memorized in order to be recited with variations. Some of his poems were compiled in important literary anthologies and cultural supplements. He will be remembered as a Vital Poet who assumed an enormous commitment with the NiCaribbean culture and history.

Eduardo Spiegeler Szejner

(1981-2018†)

Eduardo was a Guatemalan photographer and filmmaker, image-maker, dreamer, horticulturist, lover of words and barista. He directed the documentaries: Difusores Acústicos (Best Educational Documentary, Ícaro International Festival, 2005). Algunas Dimensiones de Efraín Recinos (Best Documentary, Ícaro International Festival, 2009). 

He founded the project “Pirata TV” and co-directed ANTOJOLOGIA DE CARL RIGBY (2018). He also participated in different fiction projects: Gasolina (2006), Polvo (2010), Hasta el Sol tiene manchas (2011; Best Feature, Ícaro International Festival), Películas Incompletas (2014), and co-edited Ombligo de Agua (Festival of Morelia, 2018) among others. He settled in Nicaragua where he collaborated in different film and environmental projects.

MARÍA JOSÉ ALVAREZ SACASA

(1955). Managua, Nicaragua

Photographer and filmmaker, who joined the Nicaraguan Film Institute in 1980, where she directed and produced Pan y Dignidad, Carta Abierta, & The Atlantic Coast (Mention of the Jury in the V and VI International Festival of New Latin American Cinema), among other documentary films.

As founding member of Luna Films she co-directed and co-produced with Martha C. Hernández the documentaries: No todos los sueños han sido soñados (First prize of Amnesty International, Amsterdam, 1996; Oficial Selection – XVII Festival of New Latin American Cinema, La Habana 1995), Lady Marshall (First prize in The Caribbean Images Festival, Martinique), Desde el Barro al Sur (First prize to the Best Documentary at the 5th Ícaro International Film Festival, Guatemala, 2002). 

Between 2008 and 2013 she co-produced and co-directed a duet about the African descendant population of the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua: The Black Creoles Memories and Identities and Lubaraun… 

Her photographic work was compiled in Estampas del Caribe Nicaragüense and published by IHNCA-UCA in 2000.
